The Static Output

What is The Static Output?

THE STATIC OUTPUT is a body of work, a collection of cultural initiatives, undertaken by a close-knit and far-flung group of collaborators based in the US and Europe. They are known to have coined the word "retrofuturism" and they hold a registered trademark on the word "Plagiarism®." The Static Output generally takes the form of PUBLICATIONS, usually magazines or other publicated multiples, such as booklets, CDs or cassettes.

For example--

A 30-60-90 Production Public Works : An extension of THE TAPE-BEATLES project (1987-1994).

Since the decommissioning of the the Tape-beatles flagship, Public Works have picked up the thread and re-raised the banner. They have also taken custody of The Tape-beatle's dazzling oeuvre, re-mastering and re-releasing such shameless, I mean timeless, classics as A SUBTLE BUOYANCY OF PULSE (1988) and MUSIC WITH SOUND (1993). In both cases, the predictable ploy of including previously unreleased tracks has been undertaken. Read all about it! Click!

Psrf Psrf : (the Photostatic Retrofuturist) A magazine, based on a foundation built up by its precedessors, PHOTOSTATIC MAGAZINE (1983-1994) and RETROFUTURISM (1987-1994)! Seeking your input! Click! Submit!

The most recent issue is no. 49, comprising 36 pages of full-color graphics, writings, playful Plagiarism®, and features two new major works by different artists. The enigmatic 'F.C.' contributes a tale of travel and discovery set in a mysterious land. It is rendered in 'Reformed Spelling of the English Language' and so represents a dual challenge: first decypher the meaning, then the meaning behind the meaning. The other work is similar in impulse, but is cast in entirely visual terms. It is 'a series of visual puzzles' or enigmatic collage images from (perhaps) industry's deep-structural subconscious. (If I were to tell you just what it is, it wouldn't be any fun.) The issue is $5 postage paid from the address below, or you can download the PDF below for free.

Psrf 50 is currently in production. It will be a reformed calendar for the 3rd Millennium, which begins in 2001. If you would like to submit, we would welcome it. At this point, we are looking mostly for graphics. Each submission should ideally stand on its own as a strong visual statement with, possibly, an otherworldly or disorienting flavor. Mildly disturbing or ambiguously humorous works will be favored. To put too fine a point on our definition would be to close the door on works which might stretch our our definitions.
