For immediate release:
ANNOUNCING THE PLUNDERPALOOZA PERFORMANCE EVENT
The Plunderpalooza Performance Event will rattle your cage on Saturday, September 27, 1997, at
The 360 Club on Queen Street West. This multimedia performance of art and satirical cultural
commentary will feature plunder pioneers John Oswald, Sucking Chest Wound, and Negativland's
Mark Hosler.
Beyond simple quoting or re-purposing, the artists exploring appropriation seek to create a new
generation of work from the plundered fragments of existing material, using familiar media
archetypes to create challenging new works of art.
Mark Hosler and San Francisco-based provocateurs Negativland, have been producing their unique
brand of cut-up "Culture Jamming" since their first album in 1980. They gained international
notoriety when their single "U2" was destroyed as a result of legal action by Island Records.
John Oswald, creator of ground-breaking works such as "Plunderphonics" (also destroyed as a
result of legal action by Michael Jackson) and the double album "Grey Folded", is among the
originators of the genre with works dating back to the mid-1970s. Through his writing,
recording, lecturing, visual art and involvement with The Music Gallery and Music Works
Magazine, John continues to be one of the most active, creative and articulate voices probing
the issue of copyright and cultural appropriation in art today.
Provocative and enigmatic local artists Sucking Chest Wound have mutated into various
incarnations over their many years of artistic explorations since 1980. Their album "The War
On Drugs" topped college radio charts across Canada. Sometimes described as Canada's
Negativland, the group has a reputation for providing the unexpected with each of their rare
live appearances.
In addition to the live performances, the Plunderpalooza Festival will include lectures and
film screenings. Ticket prices for the Plunderpalooza Performance Event at The 360 Club on
September 27 will be $12 in advance and $15 at the door.
