WORKS: A STATEMENT

Pictured at left is the cover of our new CD,
Matter,
a rollicking digital effort
that plumbs the depths of the public psyche, and then shares its findings.
The techniques used are similar to those of their archetypes, The Tape-beatles; the work falls somewhere in the crack between music and audio
art. We complect a soundtrack using looped samples which are subtly varied
to maintain the listener's interest, while at the same time maintaining
a steady-state chaos of arresting rhythm. Over this, we layer various effects
and spoken texts from other sources, which say what they mean, or are made
to say what they are not saying, but nonetheless we think they really mean.
Digerati? It
is by turns, heady or visceral, funny or grand, somber or danceable, grave
or uplifting. It was just released on the Dutch label Staalplaat (January 1997); it's all New; trust Us, it is
worth your getting. |

| Music with Sound, a magnum opus by the new group Public works, is an exercise in
archaeology. In its previous existence, Music
with Sound took the audio art world
by storm, quelling any thirst for a labored and perfunctory "newness."
As a completely Plagiarized® work, Music
with Sound was in turn itself plagiarized.
The tired inevitability of the cliche of redundantly stealing stolen work
is only barely matched by the bone-headedness of the act. It bears witness
to an only dimly (or not at all) comprehended sense of Music with Sound's crystalling
moral imperatives. The best way to fix this dismal situation is for the creators
of Music with Sound to steal it from themselves. This, thankfully has happened
at long last with this release. We one-up the ante by replacing one track
and adding two other unreleased and undocumented ones. |
